Ronald Shiffman

 

Portrait of Ronald ShiffmanRonald Shiffman (1937–) is an urban planner, architect, and writer. He is one of the founders of the community-based development movement and the community design movement. He co-founded and served as Director of the Pratt Center for Community Development

In 1965, he helped launch the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation with the Central Brooklyn Coordinating Council and Senator Robert F. Kennedy. In the 1970s, he created the Pratt Architectural Collaborative to aid low and moderate-income communities. Additionally, he was an organizer of the Association of Community Design Centers. He is a contributing author of Building Together: Case Studies in Participatory Planning and Community Building (New Village Press, 2014) with Roger Katan, and a co-editor of Beyond Zuccotti Park: Freedom of Assembly and the Occupation of Public Space (New Village Press, 2012) with Rick Bell, Lance Jay Brown, and Lynne Elizabeth.

In 2012, Shiffman was awarded the Jane Jacobs Medal for Lifetime Leadership. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
