Stephen Goldsmith

 

Portrait of Stephen GoldsmithStephen Goldsmith is an urban ecologist, planner, artist, scholar, and activist. He is the founder of Artspace Utah, and served as Planning Director for Salt Lake City, Director of the Frederick P. Rose Architectural Fellowship for Enterprise Community Partners, and Director of the Center for the Living City

He was the first artist to serve as a planning director in a major U.S. city, and focused much of his work on making Downtown a “walkable community.” He is a co-editor with Lynne Elizabeth of What We See: Advancing the Observations of Jane Jacobs (New Village Press, 2010), which won the Urban Communication Foundation Award. Goldsmith also received a Lifetime Sustainability Leadership Award from the University of Utah in 2019, where he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of City and Metropolitan Planning. 

Goldsmith is an accomplished woodworker, sculptor, and teacher. Large-scale environmental works and installations of his can be found in Salt Lake City. He now lives in Portland, Oregon.
