“I am an artist! A man of the theater!” This is what Nasser Rahmaninejad wrote under torture after he was arrested during the White Revolution in 1960s Iran. Judith Tannenbaum was the author of six poetry collections and coauthor with Spoon Jackson of the double memoir published by New Village Press, By Heart: Poetry, Prison, and Two LivesJudith was a poet and educator who was deeply involved with California’s Arts-in-Corrections programs. She was an authority on prison arts, and an advisor to arts programming in Minnesota state prisons. The Waging Peace in Vietnam exhibit was curated by two Waging Peace in Vietnam: U.S. Soldiers and Veterans who Opposed the War co-authors, Ron Carver and Barbara Doherty. The exhibit was accompanied by a student essay contest and a documentary contest with $500 prizes. This showing of Waging Peace was co-sponsored by Duke University’s History Department, Human Rights Center, Graduate Liberal Studies, and Center for Documentary Studies.

Board-certified psychiatrist and author of multiple books, including Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America, And What We Can Do About It and Urban Alchemy: Restoring Joy in America’s Sorted-Out Cities, Mindy Thomspon Fullilove delivered a lecture titled Urbanism Is a Participatory Sport. The lecture explored the benefits of participatory learning and the importance of engaging in a city’s activities in order to bring about positive change. The Lefkowitz Lecture Series was established with the funding raised at Marymount Manhattan College’s first benefit dinner, held to honor Attorney General (AG) Louis Lefkowitz, who served as the AG of New York State for 22 years. The lecture series features speakers from the public service sector.

Other participants included Jan Barry, Vietnam veteran, poet, author, journalist and teacher; J.J. Johnson, sentenced to prison for refusing to deploy to Vietnam; Howard Levy, M.D., Army Captain, also sentenced to prison for refusing to train Green Berets; and Susan Schnall, Navy Lt. convicted for her antiwar activity and sentenced to six months of hard labor. This event was presented by the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at the Columbia University School of International Affairs, and co-sponsored by Columbia University’s Oral History Master of Arts.

Susan Humphries, MBE, MA, shared her teaching philosophy and methodology for outdoor learning practices. Day One focused on how to create schoolyard green spaces and use these spaces for hands-on learning. Day Two emphasized outdoor learning practices that can be accomplished in paved schoolyards. Activist, author, and clinical psychiatrist Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove was a panelist at a conference entitled Urban Activism: Staking Claims in the 21st Century. This conference emerged from the shared need to create a collective discourse on how critical urban research and urban political activism are increasingly converging and creating a common field of inquiry and action. It connects scholars in various fields such as planners, geographers, historians, and critical urbanists with activists working on housing rights and the right to urban identity and the city more generally. Dr. Fullilove is the author of Root Shock, Urban Alchemy, and coauthor of Homeboy Came to Orange.
